3. Osprey User Guide

Guide for Osprey users and site administrators.

3.1. User accounts

3.1.1. Creating a new user account

Anyone can create a new user account. Click on the Create a login link in the upper-right corner and follow the instructions. A valid email address is required for new users since the initial password is sent to the given address. Users are encouraged to provide accurate information. Site administrators are strongly encouraged to not abuse the privacy of their users.

New users start as Guest class. Guest users cannot add new documents, so a site admin must change a user's class from Guest to User.

3.1.2. Editing account information

Under Preferences, select My User Info. Click on the Edit account information link. After making desired changes, click Save Changes.

3.1.3. Changing a password

Under Preferences, select Change Password. Enter the new password (twice), and click Submit.

3.2. Document objects

3.2.1. Adding a new document

Adding a new Osprey document object is the first step in distributing content. Under Manage Content, select Add New Document. Enter the core descriptive elements Title, Identifier, Object Type, and Created date, and click Next.

At this point, you have created a new document object and will be on the Edit Document page. You can enter as much information as you wish. Adding a Description and one or more Licenses will help users find your content. See the section on editing a document for more details on document attributes.

New documents do not come published, so you must publish your document to make it publically viewable.

3.2.2. Editing a document

Document maintainers may edit documents. If you created a document, you are automatically a maintainer. While viewing a document, click on the Edit button.

3.2.3. Publishing/un-publishing a document

Publishing a document makes it viewable to everyone. You should see either a Publish or Un-publish button on the document view page. Clicking this button reverses the published status of a document.

3.2.4. Deleting a document

Documents can be deleted. These items are not permanently purged, however, and can be reinstated later.

3.2.5. Maintainers and Contributors

A document maintainer can edit the list of maintainers and contributors. While on the document view page, click on the Add contributor or Add maintainer button. Adding maintainers and contributors is a two step process. First, enter part of a name and click Submit to find a user. Next, select the appropriate user and click Submit to link a user to the document.

Note: Maintainers can edit descriptive information for a document. Contributor are not necessarily valid Osprey users.

3.3. Torrents

3.3.1. Adding a torrent

Before you can add a torrent, you must have already created a torrent file. See the BitTorrent section for more information.

3.3.2. Deleting a torrent

Unlike deleting a document, torrent deletion is permanent and irreversable. To delete a torrent, click on the View Torrent(s) link on a document view page. Click the Delete link for a torrent to remove that torrent.

3.3.3. Permaseeding
