Overview

Permaseed is the BitTorrent server component of the Osprey software. It provides a link from content in a storage repository to a BitTorrent swarm, just like Apache does for WWW content. This software enables sites that need stability and reliability to offer materials to BitTorrent clients in a production-level capacity.

The following is a list of basic features and functionality.

  • Runs daemonized on a single port
  • Serves multiple torrents
  • Provides torrent root mapping (This allows torrent content to overlap and facilitates torrent serving from shared storage, e.g. SAN, NFS, AFS.)
  • Control scripts to allow remote registration of permaseeded torrents in the Osprey tracker
  • Permaseed information can optionally be announced to clients only when no seeds (or very few seeds) are present in a swarm
  • Transfer log file in Apache combined log format for permaseed site statistics generation
  • Dynamic loading and unloading of torrents (HUP signal rereads configuration files without severing existing connections)
